About
Even when faced with credible warnings that an emerging crisis could lead to mass killings, policy makers often face personal, institutional or political pressures that inhibit them from promoting the necessary preventive action. In the absence of vocal demand from voters, political leaders often make the short-term calculation that inaction is the safest course. Yet most people across the world are appalled by mass atrocities - too often in retrospect - and wish to help prevent them in the future. We need a mechanism to clearly voice, reinforce and realise those convictions in time to save lives.
The individual Responsibility to Protect (iR2P) initiative engages individuals as agents of change, transforming popular concern into tangible and sustainable political, social and economic action. By joining the dots across geographical, social and institutional barriers, and by re-imagining activism to include policy ‘insiders’, the iR2P network fosters stronger connections between those with most influence, those immediately affected by crises, and those who ask, “What can I do?”
