iR2P

the individual Responsibility to Protect

About us

The iR2P initiative was first inspired by discussions between young leaders from Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the UK at a retreat on the shore of Lake Kivu in February 2006. The retreat was convened by Never Again International, which continues to support the development and implementation of iR2P.

History has repeatedly demonstrated that it is not sufficient to leave seemingly self-evident moral imperatives to states, conventions and institutions. A critical mass of committed, spirited individuals, on the other hand, can achieve momentous things. Still a fledgling initiative, iR2P is growing into a global, multidisciplinary network of individuals personally committed to finding innovative, pragmatic ways to engage in the prevention of genocide and related crimes against humanity.

Among other things, we hope to contribute to public understanding and political support for implementation of the R2P doctrine, and to promote the importance of individual responsibility, including leadership and legal accountability. And we’d love you to get involved.
